YOUR DAY IN THE SLEEPING GOD CANYON

A 40 minute-walk starts your day, on the famous Kauri Trail at the head of the Kauaeranga Valley. This amazing 'incline track' follows an old bush tramway line, formerly used to ferry the massive kauri logs down to the valley floor. The views are immense, the scenery breathtaking. Soon you reach the river at the top of the canyon, a gentle, slow flowing stream. It's time to don the equipment, go through our safety procedures, and do some abseiling practice! And then, the adventure begins… The first waterfall drops 30 metres (100 ') into a deep dark pool, and is immediately followed by a 70-metre (230 ') wall covered by a beautiful curtain of water that crashes into yet another superb rock pool. This is an unbelievable place, and canyoning is the only way to see it! A great waterslide is the next challenge, and it carries you down toward the next abseil into a very deep pool. That abseil can be jumped by the keenest (height 10 m/33 ')! But whether you jumped it or not, everybody's getting lunch. Our great food will calm the appetite of the most voracious canyoners. Two more waterfalls (12 and 30 metres) land you on a kauri log jammed in a narrow pool, located at the top of a stunning 50-metre-waterfall. The stream, winding its way through the gorge, funnels over many more drops between the canyon walls, and finally plunges into a big round pool chiseled out of the volcanic rock. This strange suspended pool allows us a view toward the last waterfall. A state-of -the-art flying fox (tyrolean traverse), with a very wet landing, will be the last adrenaline rush of a day filled with discovery and laughter! This trip is ideal for fit, balanced people who are also water-confident, and abseiling/rappelling practice can be provided in Auckland or Thames. Transport, gear, instruction, lunches and snacks included.
