  The Sunkist Backpackers is a long established family run travelers retreat. This 1860’s Heritage Kauri Hotel is one of the oldest buildings in Thames with all the home comforts you could ask for. We modernized and restored our historic home to provide you the best Coromandel experience.

 Our great quiet residential street location was once the Main St of Grahamstown the historical gold mining heart of the Coromandel. We are only a short walk to shops, waterfront, park, monuments, bush walks, art galleries and museums. It is also a fantastic setting to just sunbathe, relax, read, catch up on your diary or chat with new friends over a nice wine while enjoying a summer BBQ or just watching the sunset.

From extreme Canyoning, day hiking or just relaxing we have it all.

Thames is the entry point for one of the best kept secrets of the Coromandel Forest Park—Kauaeranga Valley. This previously volcanic area sports a number of walks with kauri logging history. As the Kauaeranga Valley specialists we operate a daily shuttle 25kms into the drop off point for the Pinnacles an awesome 1 or 2 day hike with postcard scenery.

Try the most extreme Canyoning in NZ and abseil down a 70m waterfall. Explore museums, waterfront, Goldmine, butterfly farm, or enjoy a ride around town on one of our free bikes.
